About the Department

The Department of Archaeology, Classical Philology, and Ancient Studies  was founded on January 1, 2026, and is currently in a phase of transition. The old structures—which included a separate Institute of Archaeology and a Department of Greek and Latin Philology—are being merged into a new institute that brings together expertise in archaeology, philology, and history, with the specific aim of strengthening interdisciplinary research and teaching. Digital methods and applications play a special role in this process. This transformation is supported by the University of Zurich’s TRANSFORM funding program.

We are located at three UZH sites: The Classical Archaeology and the Archaeological Collection are housed in the building of the former Eye Clinic of the University Hospital at Rämistrasse 73; Classical Philology (including Medieval Latin) is located in Villa Tanneck at Rämistrasse 68; and Prehistoric Archaeology, as well as the chairs of Ancient History affiliated with our institute, are housed in the so-called Kollegiengebäude 2 at Karl-Schmid-Strasse 4.
 
The IAKA offers several disciplinary degree programs at the bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral levels, as well as the interdisciplinary degree programs in Ancient Studies and Interdisciplinary Archaeological Sciences.
