Prehistoric Archaeology
Prehistoric Archaeology is a discipline of cultural history. It investigates archaeological sources – archaeological features, and broader contexts – from the origins of humanity through the Early Middle Ages.
Our section conducts research and teaching across the full spectrum of the discipline, with a primary focus on Switzerland and Europe, complemented by a broader comparative perspective. Teaching focuses on settlement, economic, and social archaeology; human ecology; materials science and archaeometry; as well as the development of methods and theories. Field research focuses on the prehistory of the Alps, the archaeology of the northern Mediterranean, and the Metal Ages in Europe. Other research groups work in cultural-anthropological and comparative archaeology, human bioarchaeology, and experimental archaeology.
As archaeologists, we are committed to internationally recognized guidelines governing the treatment of archaeological heritage, in particular the Malta Convention and the Codes of Practice of the European Association of Archaeologists (EAA).
